Over the course of several months, a team of over 50 fellow students and young professionals from all over North America work together to plan and execute every detail of conference. The leadership and initiative of our directors and staff ensure UNAVSA-14 will continue to be a quality experience and opportunity for attendees consistent with the organization’s mission of empowering young leaders within the North American Vietnamese community.
Christopher Hew is an alumnus of University of Florida (UF) with a Bachelor in Biology and from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) with a Master’s in Forensic Science. Born in Miami Florida, Chris is currently working as a Forensic Chemist for the Alabama Department of Forensic Science. Chris is a founding member of UVSASE, helping the organization attain its 501(c)3 status in 2016. He has supported the Southeast region in many roles, including acting as an Executive Committee member for Southeast Leadership Camp in 2016. With UNAVSA, he began his journey in 2014 through attending the UNAVSA-11 Conference. From there, he continued to serve this community through various outlets such as the UNAVSA-12 Family Committee, UNAVSA-13 & UNAVSA-14 Logistics Committee. Chris’s hobbies include board games, crafting, trying new foods, and trolling friends and loved ones!
A Southern boy through and through. Chris Pham was forged in the Lone Star state of Texas, and raised in the Pelican state of Louisiana. He has spent the past seven years working in finance management. Chris has been active in his community and has held different leadership roles within numerous organizations over the last 8 years. Within UNAVSA, he has been involved at multiple levels including attendee, at UNAVSA-12 in Seattle, WA; Family Leader at UNAVSA-13 in Boston, MA; and Family Program Director UNAVSA-14 in New Orleans, LA, respectively.
Jimmy Mai was born and raised in Amarillo, Texas then later moved to Houston, Texas. He graduated from the University of Houston with a B.S. in Kinesiology and is now pursuing his doctorate in Physical Therapy. He is passionate about leadership and has been honored to have held numerous positions. Some relevant roles include Secretary and Senior Advisor for the University of Houston VSA, Secretary and President for UVSA South, UNAVSA-13 Programming Committee Member, and UNAVSA-14 Programming Director. Some of his interests and hobbies include: singing, dancing, art, video/board games, laughing, traveling, sassing others, trolling, and squatting for the booty.
Each of our directors oversees a different but equally important aspect of the leadership conference. Every fall, directors are selected by the conference and associate directors from an applicant pool to lead and organize one of the nine committees: Entertainment, Family, Hospitality, Information Technology, Logistics, Marketing, Media, Programming, and Registration.
